1. Where do you get the best exchange rates (for US dollars) near Shangri-la Hotel? I presume at the hotel, the rates are higher than elsewhere.
2. Is it safe to take pictures on the street or my camera might be stolen?

The best exchange rates offered in Malaysia, for any currency, are usually from local banks. I’ve found that money changers located along the Jalan Bukit Bintang usually charge a mark-up for currency exchanges. Banks however adhere to the international trading and exchange rates for that day. I’ve had a very good experience with currency exchanges at Maybank and RHB Bank.
Malaysia is pretty safe for tourists and you need not fear about your camera or any other belongings being stolen. However, as is common anywhere in the world, you’ll need to take some basic care to ensure your stuff is not stolen. Same holds true for your backpack. Just dont leave your stuff unattended at bus, train stations or in restaurants, malls etc.
