How do you find the specs on LEDs from a grab bag?
I recently bought some LEDs from a surplus store. They were in a bin labeled “IR LEDs?” I don’t know anything about them as far as current rating, voltage drop, etc, and I’m not really sure how to find them. I’ve tried hooking up a single LED by itself to several different power supplies with different voltages and current ratings, but I’m yet to see any of the LEDs I’ve tested light up or burn out. I know they’re infrared, so I’ve been using a digital camera in night mode to try to see the light. I need the specs so I can make a circuit with them for a project. If anyone knows how to find those specs, it would be greatly appreciated.
You will not get specs for those LEDs.
The best thing you can do with “grab bag ” IR LEDs is just run them at 15mA. Put that current through them, and notice the voltage drop you get. Use that information.
Remember, LEDs are designed to be current-controlled, not voltage-controlled.
