How do Nikon AI and AI-S lenses perfom on the Nikon D40 and D40x?
I know that manual AI and AI-S lenses don’t meter on the D40, but is it possible to change the aperture and choose the shutter speed on the camera?
Yes; but the camera must be in manual mode for the older lenses. You change aperture by turning the aperture ring, and adjust shutter speed by turning the thumb wheel. The lenses that perform the best on film cameras will also perform best on the D40 and D40x; the later multi-coated versions are generally better than the early versions. Those from the early-mid ’70s and later seem to have the best coatings, giving better color saturation and contrast. In case you weren’t aware, the D40 and D40x can also use the early pre-AI lenses without a problem, and they’re often cheaper than the AI and newer lenses (but didn’t have the best coatings).
The ones that make the most sense to buy and use on the D40 are the “fast”, large aperture lenses that would cost so much to buy, if they were modern auto-focus. Mid ’70s and later 50mm f1.4 and 50mm f1.8 are superb on the D40, as are the 105mm f2.5 Nikkor, and 105mm f2.8 Series E. I’d also highly recommend the Series E 75-150mm zoom. If you’re doing macros, a great, but inexpensive lens is the classic Micro-Nikkor-P•C 55mm f3.5. All work perfectly on the D40 and D40x.
