When will Canon produce next model after Powershot S5 IS?
While Canon’s S5 IS superzoom camera has many desirable features, including a hot-shoe, and movable viewing screen, reviews indicate that other super-zoom camera brands have wider angles lenses than Canon’s Powershot S5 IS (35mm at present). Also, artifacts are likely to occur when using tele part of zoom because of demands of many megapixels upon its rather small CCD (light-sensitive receptor and processor – if I’ve got the terminology right). So I’m interested to know whether Canon will take up the challenge of improving these features in its next superzoom model. Also, when is the next model after Powershot S5 IS likely to be released?
Since the S5 was only released last year, you have to figure it’ll be another six months to a year before the next model in the line gets going, since Canon’s generally on an 18-24 month schedule. They moved a little faster in releasing the S5 as an upgrade of the S3, so hope they’re still in the fast lane as far as development goes. Either way, major releases usually get announced at Photokina in the fall or PMA in the spring.
And considering the not-so-wide 35mm wide end has been one of the biggest complaints about the S5, it seems likely Canon will address that in the next model.
