Is Canon DSLR a good choice….?
Basically I want something that will produce GREAT (the best-est a dsrl can offer) quality photos… of peope, landscapes and what not to be used during a holiday trip 
So not too big and heavy, but not compact either… I figured something like this is the best:

I like EOS 500D (Digital Rebel T1i) but perhaps not that particular one because I want something around $500 ? If that’s possible. Can you suggest some other GOOD DSLR camera ?
is there a DSLR which can record videos though? and preferbably the same price? l like Nikon D3000 but it doesn’t have video 
it’s more about the lens than the body.
Canon and Nikon are both excellent (think Mercedes & BMW). pick either one. Canon has some issue with lens compatibility between models, so look into that.
have you considered picking up a second-hand camera body and adding new lenses.
as far as recording videos go, it’s still a fairly new idea to chuck this in with an SLR, and do they actually do a decent job of it? i’ve no idea.
