what is the best all round lens for a Canon EOS Kiss Digital X camera?
I was bought a Canon Kiss EOS digital camera which had no lens with it. On checking the Canon store there seem to be so many options. Help!
The best “all-around” lens is Canon 18-200mm IS lens. It covers a wide range, going from decent wide angle to relatively long telephoto. It comes with about $550 price tag though. Just to avoid any illusions, however, the lens in question is what’s called “jack of all trades, master of none”. Or in other words, while it does literally replace a bag full of lenses you can carry around with you, it has some shortcomings at nearly all focal lengths, because making this big 11x piece of glass takes some compromises. If you want the best performance, fill up your bag with 2-3 lenses to cover the same range, but with smaller zooms. For example 18-55 and 55-200 are a popular combination… You’ll probably save a few hundred dollars too and get a better image quality. Then you can split it down even further, including a few primes for often needed focal lengths, or ultra wide angles. But that of course is going to cost respectively.
All in all – about 95% of people who used 18-200 lens mentioned above have never noticed the optical shortcomings, or noticed, but didn’t care much. If you are one of those 5% that need “perfection”, you may consider other ways, but otherwise that 18-200 is a decently good choice for your money, and you will probably not have to worry about another lens for a while, until you’re ready to do some more serious and specific work such as landscape/architectural photography (need wider angle), flowers/insects (macro), sports/action (a fast lens), or other types of photography that require a lens to have some particular optical qualities. But you will know that only when you’ve used your camera for a while, and figured out what it is that limits your creative ambitions, then you’ll know which way to go!

P.S. Just re-read my answer and realized, that I’ve given you a bunch of relatively expensive options without knowing your budget. If your budget is limited, grab 18-55mm IS lens for now. That will get you a good start, and then, just like I said above you can add more to it as needed, such as 55-200, 70-300, etc for telephoto, or maybe instead you’d want to go wider later on…. That 18-55 will set you back about $150 for now, and you’ll worry about the rest later.
