Are SLR digital cameras cheaper in US than Japan?
Hi!
I am interested in buying a Pentax K10D digital SLR camera body.
Since I will be travelling around in the near future, I was looking for prices in different countries:
Amazon in US. $650
Amazon in Japan: $840
Surprice!! I always thought cameras were chaper in Japan, but it is not? How come?!
The stuff that’s included (batteries charger etc) seem same too.
Is there any additional cost except for postage when buying in US (I want 1-2 delivery to my hotel) ?
How does it work with the tax since the rate varies with state in US?
If anybody have experience comparing the prices US vs Japan, or experience in buying cameras online in US, I am very interested in knowing more!
(…or does anybody know a good camera shop in Chicago?)

Yes it will likely be cheaper in the US versus Japan.
The main reason in one word is “Volume”. When I used to travel abroad, I used to think the same thing and quickly learned that the US buying power (volume purchases) allows us to buy products for much less and this allows us to offer them for significantly cheaper prices than most other places.
One word of caution however. I’ve found that US electronics only come with a US or N. American warranty. This means if something happens to your camera then you cannot get warranty service in your country and instead would have to pay for the repair.
