Can someone please explain the term ‘full frame’ in the context of digital SLR cameras?
And give me some suggestions of affordable but good quality dig slrs that offer this feature?
The 35mm film frame is 24mm x 36mm. A full-frame DSLR is one with a sensor that is 24mm x 36mm. By using a sensor this size there is no “crop factor” – a 20mm lens on a full-frame sensor behaves as a 20mm lens would on a 35mm film camera. On a smaller sensor DSLR the 20mm lens would have an equivalent focal length of 30mm or 32mm.
Currently the least expensive full-frame DSLR is the Canon 5D (which is being updated with the 5D Mark II) or the Nikon D700. Sony will be releasing their A900 full-frame DSLR which will be priced competively and from early reports is going to be a contender in this market.
