Help me get the best digital camera.?
I am a first time buyer and want to get a good deal for a really good camera.
I have researched online and am about to buy the Fuji Finepix F30 based on the price, decenent megapixel, large LCD, up to 3200 ISO, and rechargeable battery.

Can you find a camera better? I like to think I am pretty good at finding good deals – but I have never purchased or owned a digital camera before – and I would love to be shown a better deal! As this is the main Christmas gift and I don’t want it to flop.
Nope. No help needed. You’ve found the best one. There’s a slightly new version out called the F31fd, which has a face detection algorithm that helps it to choose the focus and metering point, but probably not worth the extra price. The jury’s still out on this one.
If you want to spend less, you can also look at the F20. It has the same lens, senor and image processing, but fewer manual modes and a lower resolution LCD. But- you can get it really cheap. I saw NewEgg had it for $175, and that included an xD card as well as a case.
Buy the F30. It has truly top notch image quality, well made and the ONLY compact camera with high ISO capability. The ISO3200 is too noisy for normal use, but the ISO1600 is quite usable and the ISO800 is practically clean. 2-3 stops better than any other compact digicam.
tips: for outdoor shots, it tends to let the highlights saturate in favor of brightening up faces. Many users prefer to dial in -1/3 or -2/3 exposure compensation so that the highlights don’t get clipped. The average and multi metering modes do have very different result in some situations. Play with them and figure out which works best for your. Also- the F20/F30 shows a bit of purple fringing at bright/dark borders, such as tree leaves. Put it in aperture priority auto and close down the lens a bit to reduce the effect for these outdoor shots.
