Will a Tamron 28-200 lens with a Nikon mount, manufactured before digital cameras, work on a Nikon D40?
I have an excellent Tamron lens designed for a Nikon camera before the days of digital photography. Although it’s an AF lens and will only work in manual mode without an adapter, can I use it with the D40 without harm to it. In its instruction manual, Nikon hints that this could occur, but I’m not sure this is just fair warning or has been designed sell more Nikor lenses. Specs below. Will appreciate any information you can send to me.
Tamron Aspherical Lens
AF 28-200MMm 1.38-5.6
2.1M(6.9Ft.) 710N Japan
3.8 – 22 Aperture ring
Serial Number 509466 (? I think – only identification number on lens)
First, you have a typing mistake. It is AF 28-200MM F/3.8-5.6
Current models of this lens have an internal focus motor and will work on D40
Nikon D40 doesn’t have an internal focus drive motor and hence no mechanical focus drive pin. You have to check your Lens and see if it has CPU contact pins for controlling it’s internal auto focus motor. Or it depends on camera for Auto focus (please check source 1). Otherwise; you will have to stick with manual focus
